Tips to boost your Mac’s performance

As I promise tips to improved boot time for the Mac:

1. Open System Preferences, and then Accounts

2. Select your account in the left pane
, and select Login items (The stuff on the right.)

3. These items will start automatically when your Mac boots.

4. To remove an item from the list. Select it and delete it. (Removing the item will prevent it from starting when your Mac boots.)

5. Disconnect external hard drives when you boot up your computer.

Quick Tips to Boost PC Performance

I know there are existing variations of “good practices” to speed up your pc and pc boot-times however, here is what I recommend: (Mac Users I will write about it next week.)

1. Get Resource Friendly Virus Protection (Previously Posted Here)

2. Clean up your boot processes.

a. Click on your “Start” Menu

b. Click on “Run”

c. Type-in “msconfig”

d. Select the “Start-up” Tab

e. Un-check the programs you don’t immediately use. Don’t worry, you can still access them, they just won’t be part of your “boot-up” processes.

3. Start using an external hard drive or secure web storage for larger files you don’t access as frequently.

4. Store pictures on an online account like Flickr.

5. Use a flash drive (a.k.a. thumb drive) to boost your RAM. (more to come in a later post since this is only a temporary technique)

The difference between a modem and a router.

Recently I’ve been getting a lot of questions about where to find an “internet cable splitter.” This is a common misunderstanding when people try to get internet connection on two computers, but what they really need is a router. To better understand how the process works I’ll explain how the internet gets to you:

1. You will typically get internet through an ISP (Internet Service Provider).

2. Most providers will also give you a modem. A modem takes the “packets” of information out of the internet and deciphers them so your computer can understand it.

3. Because you cannot “split” this information in half; giving one half of it to one computer and the other half to the other computer. You will then need a router.

4. The router will then take the “deciphered” information and “mirror” the information so you can provide up to 4 computers the same internet connection.

Getting Views For Your Website

If you subscribe to a social networking service like MySpace, Friendster, Facebook, Twitter, or even Youtube you already know how to get viewership. First, we’ll shift some of that viewership to your website; to do this, just ask your “friends” or “subscribers” to visit your site. Next, provide incentive. For example, write about a useful piece of information or even give away coupon/promo code.

For the more common ways to receive viewership:
- Register your website through dmoz.org this makes you search-able through most major search engines.
-Update your meta tags in your html code. There are even programs that help you do that now.
-Pay for it: use Google Adwords (Basically the opposite of Adsense).

What is a web host?

It’s been my experience that the most profitable (and by far lowest risk!) way to make money on the side is with a website. There are several kinds of websites and ways to profit from them, but for now we’ll just start with the basics of starting one.

Thinking of starting your own website? One of the first things you need to do is purchase services through a hosting company, because your computer is unable to stay connected to the internet 24/7 or withstand the traffic generated from the World Wide Web. Hosting companies (or web hosts), who own or lease large servers, can provide you with the space and internet connectivity to run a successful website.

I personally use Dreamhost.

Now you may have heard about free web hosting as well, and it does exist. But the reason I strongly recommend a paid service like Dreamhost (and use it myself), is that a paid service allows you to fully own your own domain (ex. www.domain.com), whereas a free service only gives you a subdomain (ex. www.subdomain.domain.com/something else). You can see how the latter is more confusing, whereas the first is easy to remember and adds legitimacy to your business. The cost for a host is low enough that I STRONGLY recommend using Dreamhost. I even got a promo code for all of you, which can give you free registration: it’s

(it is not case sensitive)

This will be the first of a series that will help you understand how to make money by creating your own site.

What are good virus protection programs for my PC?

How do you protect your PC? Here’s a good rule of thumb for virus protection software: use something bought, something free, and something else.

Something bought: Let’s explore the most commonly used software protection programs: Norton and McAfee. Although decent software programs, both tend to be “resource hogs” and slow your computer’s processing power- especially when they are scanning. So, if you don’t want your computer to slow down go with “resource-friendly” software. Since there are multiple options for resource-friendly software out there, do your research and find something that fits your needs. I have used older versions of Webroot because it does similar scanning to Norton with half of the footprint and based on current reviews for the new Webroot Antivirus and SpySweeper 2010, I would recommend this product. Other resource-friendly products (or so I’ve heard) are F-Secure Antivirus 2010 and Trend Micro Internet Security 2010.

Something free: I have typically used Spybot Search & Destroy. When it comes to free anti-virus there is nothing negative I can say about it. Another great program out there is AVG; I’ve almost always used the free version, so if anyone has experience on the bought version, please comment.

Something else: Trend Micro’s HijackThis, although it is not an intuitive program and is set up for advanced users, is a powerhouse in the game. The best way to explain it is like using the knowledge and experience of multiple users to pinpoint specific threats on the internet and you then would personally find it and delete it yourself. Note: When using this product, BE CAREFUL you will have the potential to delete important registry items on your computer! Yes, that would be BAD!

Okay, I know I’m not a great writer so I do welcome corrections. I love you Karli, I did my best…lol. Lynn, I hope this helps. Andrew you’re smarter than me when it comes to computers so I welcome your corrections too. As well as you…. Bear, you’re ancient enough to know the history and inner workings of the programs so please comment too!
