The difference between a modem and a router.
Recently I’ve been getting a lot of questions about where to find an “internet cable splitter.” This is a common misunderstanding when people try to get internet connection on two computers, but what they really need is a router. To better understand how the process works I’ll explain how the internet gets to you:
1. You will typically get internet through an ISP (Internet Service Provider).
2. Most providers will also give you a modem. A modem takes the “packets” of information out of the internet and deciphers them so your computer can understand it.
3. Because you cannot “split” this information in half; giving one half of it to one computer and the other half to the other computer. You will then need a router.
4. The router will then take the “deciphered” information and “mirror” the information so you can provide up to 4 computers the same internet connection.
