What is a web host?

It’s been my experience that the most profitable (and by far lowest risk!) way to make money on the side is with a website. There are several kinds of websites and ways to profit from them, but for now we’ll just start with the basics of starting one.

Thinking of starting your own website? One of the first things you need to do is purchase services through a hosting company, because your computer is unable to stay connected to the internet 24/7 or withstand the traffic generated from the World Wide Web. Hosting companies (or web hosts), who own or lease large servers, can provide you with the space and internet connectivity to run a successful website.

I personally use Dreamhost.

Now you may have heard about free web hosting as well, and it does exist. But the reason I strongly recommend a paid service like Dreamhost (and use it myself), is that a paid service allows you to fully own your own domain (ex. www.domain.com), whereas a free service only gives you a subdomain (ex. www.subdomain.domain.com/something else). You can see how the latter is more confusing, whereas the first is easy to remember and adds legitimacy to your business. The cost for a host is low enough that I STRONGLY recommend using Dreamhost. I even got a promo code for all of you, which can give you free registration: it’s

2KGEN

(it is not case sensitive)

This will be the first of a series that will help you understand how to make money by creating your own site.
